This article is not about user stats , penetration or another key indices which would show how DTH is better than Netflix or vice versa . Its about this simple experiment which I did at home to check the behavioural changes my 4 yr old daughter and 9 yr old son , As in how would they respond to changes if DTH is discontinued and only Netflix is used for watching series during dinner time . I use DTH services to get my dose of news updates and couch travel the world however same service is used by my kids to watch peppa pig , pokemon , doraemon and any other Japanese / English cartoon translated in Hindi , also to add avenger and spider man series . My wife has a different taste and is primarily hooked on to Zee news 9 pm show DNA analysis , Sudhir Chaudhary . It's not that she's a news person , but then I am giving her benefit of doubt here .

So its always a point of conflict as in which channel should we watch while having our Dinner whether it would be travelXP , NDTV good times or cartoon network or Zee news . Tired of this discussion on daily basis I decided for 1 weeks time, I shall not recharge our DTH and shift to Netflix to get our dose of entertainment .

And so it begins On the day 1 we decided We would start with Sarfarosh ( saragrahi ) series based on 1890s where British Indian Army was dominating Northern and eastern Afghanistan . Daughter had to be incentivized with a cadbury eclair , Son was more excited tough . Series was nicely picturized and it actually gave a feeling of rugged terrain of Afghanistan

Following were the observations over a weeks time :

Kids started asking relevant questions and showing strong sense of inquisitiveness about the events taking place :

i) Questions like where is this place Papa , can you show us on google earth.

ii) But Punjab is in India Papa why are sikh soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and calling it as their mother land

iii) Why are all senior officers british

iv) Who are these yusufzais and why are they fighting with our Army

v) what is telegraph papa , why arent they using mobile phones to connect

vi) best of all the question which I liked personally : Punjabi pagdi kyu pehente hai aur Dadhi kyu hai Unko ( Why are sikhs wearing turban and why have they kept beard ) .

What really happened here was , children who were subjected to non logical or pure entertaining cartoon content have suddenly started asking questions related to Geography , History , Culture . Eventually these sessions become more informative and value adding for all . Where a simple topic was picked up every day and discussion , research was done on it using chrome cast , google earth and wikipedia . ( Eg : where is fort Lockart based )

Whys and Hows started getting answered , children became more curious about history and started showing deeper understanding between nations history and Geography. 20% of dinner time which was spent only in finalizing what needs to be seen is saved .

Due to lack of advertisements, continuity was maintained and everyone was hooked on , any clarification on concept was done by simply pausing the episode for few minutes and then resuming it . While Netflix has a niche consumption in India yet , I can clearly see the dept of content ecosystem it has and how dedicated Niches get attracted to it for different taste of content . Plus to add on to this social benefits it offers at family level of spending time together and watching a uninterrupted series , along with educational value .

Now it has become a part of daily routine and we have widened our scope to other series like Boss baby ( its seriously funny ) , Star trek , lost in universe and Buddha . While the cycle of learning and questioning continues with entertainment . #Netflix #Content #Saragrahi #Buddha #DTH .

Legend of Shivaji Maharaj

Dear Children , 

People who stay in Pune are blessed with rich historical and  legacy associated with Shivaji Maharaj .From Lal Mahal , Shinhagad fort to Shaniwar wada there is lots to discover and understand about their importance from historical point of view . Maharashtra and particularly Pune was at the centre of resurgence of native Indian Maratha power in 17 th century .

Allow me to give you a brief view of India at that time . We had foreign  Turkic forces like Mughals ruling northern India from modern day Afghanistan to Delhi and further to central India  , Adilshahi , Qutubshahi , Nizam Shahi descendent's of Bahamian sultanate ruling central and southern India .

               Foregin European powers like Portuguese had established themselves well with Kochin , Goa and other port cities trading in local spices from South , supplying Indian slaves to middle East in collaboration with Adilshahi . British understood the significance of trade with India and were keen to establish their stronghold here , collaborating with Mughals for business . They started trading in Arms , ammunition in return getting tax exemptions and priority to do business in India .
So broadly speaking there was  not a single Indian ethnic ruler with its independent empire , there were smaller states which paid tribute to larger kingdoms and dependent on them for their protection and well being always on their mercy .
A Nation which had existed for thousands of years had its pride in shambles , Hindu civilization was totally subjugated by turkic and other foregin powers . Vedic way of life was about to be extinct .
Last know major  Hindu Kingdom of Vijayanagar was destroyed in 16 th century by combined forces of 5 Islamic kingdoms .

It is at this adverse time a king a born , Chatrpatti Shivaji Maharaj 19 th Feb 1630 at the fort of Shivneri . His mother Jijabai instilled values of Independence , self rule and read him epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata from his Childhood .This value system had great influence on his policies.  From his early days Shivaji Maharaj understood the intricacies of administration from his Father Shaji Raje Bhosle . Shahji Raje was famous General serving under Adilshahi Sultanate , he had territory of Pune under him which he developed and made revenue generating with his people management skills .

Shivaji Maharaj picked up these skills which will later assist him in establishing Hindavi Swarajya .Constantly fighting Guerrilla wars Shivaji Maharaj managed to establish his kingdom and got officially decorated as Chatrapati  (rajyaabhishek) on 6th June 1674 . Post which Shivaji Maharaj led a Major campaign in South capturing more than 300 forts right upto Jingee, south of Chennai . This fort will play very crucial role in future when Aurangzeb attacks Deccan and his forces are taking one fort after another . Jingee withstood the Mughal seige for 8 long yrs and re enforced the Maratha resistance against Mughals ..
Thus establishing Maratha Hindavi Swarajya , which translates to self rule of people . His policies towards farmers were very liberal and just unlike foregin rulers who exploited them at their will . He was an able administrator and nominated  asta Pradhan , council of 8 ministers each having defined role .
He was military strategist and laid down principals of fort warfare which mentioned how fort should be constructed , what kind of rationing and military personnel are required to defend fort for 1 yrs time minimum .
He was aware of the threat from the seas hence he constructed a powerful Navy of nearly 700 ships and eliminated any threats from the sea . 

On the whole life of Maharaj Shivaji is a shining example of how an individual with his will power and determination can change the course of history and make entire Nation proud of his legacy .
I would request each one reading this article to pick a book called Challenging destiny and give it a read . I am sure his achievements would continue to inspire youths of India for centuries to come .

Independence day.. but what does it mean..

Just felt like sharing few thoughts on independence day ..

Freedom.. I believe it holds special significance especially for Indians. It's good to feel free to express your views thoughts , do as you like , travel in your country where ever you feel like .Go to temple and pray to your god , follow your cultural and religious beliefs . I am a Hindu hence I take it as a privilege that country where this religion was born is still adhering to faith  until present day and not yet lost it totally .

There were civilizations which were less fortunate like Persians , Aztecs , Incas ,red Indians ,  some Nordic communities which fell victim to external forces and would be terminated forever inspite of thriving for thousands of years .. but we survived , not just survived we are on path to reclaim our lost glory ..

Why I consider it as a privilege few historical reasons it .. not just freedom from Britishers but there were numerous occasions where vedic way of living was under existential crisis and was about to be over run by agressive foreign invaders purely on basis of brut force .. first wave came in for  of Greeks 3 century BC , then came sakas , khusans  , Hunas popularly know as Huns , Muhammed Quasim from ummayad chaliphat , Ghazni , Ghori , Taimur , Mongols yes even Mongols had come here , finally Babur, abdalli and Nadir shah ..
Every time some aggressor came displayed  inhuman savagery , brut force . there was resistance , confrontation, battles , sacrifices by  Hero's in form ethnic rulers lost in pages of history . From Chandragupta Maurya, 2 nd century  Gupta empire , Gautami putra , satvahanas , pandyas , 6 th century  Kabulshahi , Zabul Shahi kings of Afghanistan, Raja Dahir of Sindh ... Bappa Rawal of Mewar , Maharanas , Sikhs of Punjab, Marathas of Deccan.. each of these represents an historical epoc which requires understanding and study .. not just to get a historical perspective but to understand sacrifices made by them to preserve their way of life and preserve this culture ..
Let's not look at independence as a event on 15 th August1947 .. but as an culmination of all these historical episodes which has given us an sense of entitlement to live the way we wish , preserve our culture and beliefs .. The onus purely lies with us today to respect and Cherish it .. or simply take it as another public holiday .. Jai Hind , Vande Materam ..

For any country's citizen to feel proud , they need to know about their ancestors , their sacrifices , challenges faced in form of external attackers and how they emerged victorious in such situations .
They need to understand civilizations  continuity and evolution  in co relation to its nations geography and how it influenced regional culture and  history.
Unfortunately in India , this nobel task of teaching kids their rich heritage is assigned to some twisted leftist mentality holding scholars which work with an ulterior motive of projecting such a picture of this nation that a child is utterly frustrated disinterested and finds himself carrying a defeatist mentality in comparison to western civilizations ...by the time schooling is done he carries hazzy notion about his civilization and culture and is mostly disinterested ..
Such students or children eventually will have lack of commitment towards the nation will low sense of patriotism and self esteem on international  platform .

Now who are these people ..

Congress party nominated Romila Thapar a know leftist along with Irfan Habib and R S Sharma who work on the content of history books for nearly 4 decades now .No history book capture the struggle of establishment of Mauyrian empire , Maratha Empire , Vijaynagar empire or how south east Asia is closely related to India in cultural terms ..
How Gandhara  present day Afghanistan was epitome of classical Indian music , even today we have a cultural programme in Pune having name Gandharva music fest .. How Indians dominated trade routes for centuries together , trading with Greeks , Romans and Chinese much before Portuguese learnt to built their ships .Basra which is city in Iraq was called Al Hind because concentration of Indian traders in the city .

  All we know is Vasco Da Gama found sea route to India , completely ignoring the inquisition of Goa and brutal methods used by Portuguese  here . Thist of manipulation and partial selective information is provided to students ..  

These are the same people who have filed a litigation in supreme court in protest against arrest of suspected naxalites plotting to kill prime minister .. The lawyer fighting the case is Abhishek Manu Singhvi from Congress party .
The Nexus is clear and on the face .. leftist historians collaborating with Congress party creating a confused mentality citizens who can be swayed in any direction provided they see their  menial personal gains in form of subsidiary , reservations , benefits  over National Interest ..
Citizen aware of the true Historical past of this country would always be willing to sacrifice of not much at least a little for larger National interest..

Mumbai where's your heart gone !!

As usual days goes by and all are busy with their daily routine of work and travel and home .. a balancing act which every mumbaiker has developed an expertise over period of time . People find their unique ways to best use their travel time for recreation which constitutes reading , listening music , bird watching or simply catching a snooze .. 

But on an off some or other brain numbing news of barbaric acts shatter this snooze or daily pendulum like movements  and make you realize how vulnerable you are . Mumbaiker and vulnerable you are kidding me .. no sorry folks I am not .. We need to realize that all jingoism about mumbaiker being strong and resilient is a myth and bull crap to be frank . Fact remains  that no one cares a f about anyone else in the mean and lean city . People have become way too immune to inhuman behavior of Mumbai .Its a money spinning machine which everyone wants to keep running no matter what the price. Spirit is dead long back and body is on ventilator . If you have a loving family , good colleagues and understanding partner consider yourself truly blessed ones. Cherish , nurture and treasure them as they are real treasures in your life which brings you happiness and joy , they are your strength and your true backup .. They shall help you rise and support you when  destiny and situation is adverse and have pushed you to a corner.  

The incident which I mentioned about, no one could imagine this can happen within  200 mts from where u r working .. but it did .. you never know when this distance can be zero . I believe strongly that girl which has gone through this trauma had great parents and friends which has given her this fighting spirit by virtue of which she aspires to resume her normal life back .  
I want all mumbaikers to care for all mumbaikers ..have a heart ..feel the pain help support each other and keep spirit of mumbai alive .

What an achievement ...

As normal routine you get up in the morning  thinking about how you are going to reach office, overcoming n number of obstacles and hurdles  . And obstacles they sure are ... in absolute sense . Just to name a few,  finding an auto to the station a big challenge , mumbai is a place where rickshaw drivers are more choosy about passengers than a lady about her dress ...obstacle 2 reaching platform on time to catch that 8.47 local which you know from your homework and research that it starts from platform 8 or 9 at boivali in which you have a very good probability of entering ... yes entering and not sitting please note . 

Where if you get a chance to sit it like lady luck has started favoring you and you can start betting on horse race ... hehe... anyways let's move to next one ..on the way to your destination you are feverishly praying that train is not delayed and it makes you reach in time ...  after reaching your destination you start hunting for taxi .. you jump,  you run , request , threaten pull all tricks in book to get that taxi .. never mind old man or lady waiting in hot sun .. but then that's the way mumbai is sympathy less ... your goal needs to be achieved rest all can manage on their own ...

Finally you are at office to go through another day of slug fest , intellectual discussions with no outcomes, meetings and con calls  .. working as hard as you can ensuring all the pieces fit in place and tasks are delivered ... pheww what a day ... but it isn't over yet .. now the reverse journey starts

You mentally prepare yourself to traverse the same rout again as you have traced in the morning ... overcoming same obstacles and hindrances....

So starts the reverse journey with a simple prayer in the heart god please allow me to catch 6.42 local train to borivali and please help me find a seat.I cannot take another round of excersion..... pls pls pls ... 

To your surprise you manage to reach on time on station and are ready to  pounce with your last bit of energy ... as train arrives you immediately scan the compartments for vacant seats as bogeys go by ... your brain is in hyper active mode and working on probability of finding a seat in first class compartment .. first first class compartment goes with few vacant seat immediately you realign yourself to board 2 nd first class but in nick of movement this agile veteran out paces you and enters the compartment ... alas he gets one seat which was vacant ...  
You are not disappointed and immediately activate deep scan mode searching for seat behind partitions and last seats hoping there are only 7 people and you can squeeze in ... and then it happens there is a seat vacant just behind the partition in corner which other did not realize thanks to my sharp senses and presence of mind .. immediately you jump on opportunity crushing a couple of feet in process and duly apologizing to them ..Amount of satisfaction is much more than amount of comfort seat gives ...

Wow what an achievement it is .....
